What is a SFP?

SFP’s are small form-factor pluggable devices, designed for use with small form factor (SFF) connectors, and offer high speed and physical compactness. SFP’s compact, hot-pluggable transceiver used for data communication applications.  These small metal devices plug into a special switch slot and support communication over either fibre optic or copper networking cable.

How do SFP Modules differ?

SFP transceivers are expected to perform at data speeds of up to ten gigabits per second and possibly higher. Because SFP modules can be easily interchanged, electro-optical or fibre optic networks can be upgraded and maintained more conveniently than has been the case with traditional soldered-in modules.

Rather than purchasing OEM SFP’s, which can result in a substantial costs, both in maintenance and initial cost, it is worth considering a different brand SFP Module. Due to the reliability and performance renowned of OEM SFP’s, that are well-known for hardware at a certain high-end price point, OEM SFP’s are typically priced higher than some businesses and organisations can afford to spend.
